Periodontal Disease Can be Transmitted From One Person to Another

Everyone knows that the recipe for success with gum disease involves good oral hygiene. Did you know that exposure to another individual with gum disease can put you at an increased risk to contract periodontal disease yourself.

Several studies have shown that periodontal disease can be transmitted from one person to another. Examples of transmission would be from one child to another, parent to child and parent to spouse. Long Island periodontist Dr. Scharf advises clients continually about their risk.

How is gum disease transmitted?

Bacteria is generated from pus and bleeding coming from infected gums. The pus or blood then mixes with the saliva in the mouth and can be transmitted to others. Transmission can be through direct contact such as kissing, eating after one another, or drinking after one another. Transmission can also be through the air by sneezing, coughing or simply breathing. Transmission usually only occurs when someone is around another for extended periods of time. It is very important to check in with your doctor if you are around someone constantly that either has periodontal disease or is at great risk to have periodontal disease.

There are certain steps that you can take to reduce your risk of contracting periodontal disease from those around you such as reduced exposure. The best idea if you feel you are at risk is to ensure you are practicing good oral hygiene.

Dr. David Scharf a Long Island Periodontist has the advanced training to diagnose and treat gum disease as conservatively as possible. Don't live with bleeding gums or spread gum disease germs to your loved ones. Treat gum disease on Long Island by calling Dr. Scharf today.
