there was an article in the NY Times yesterday with this headline. Basically, Britain is not paying for all medication. They are making a cost benefit analysis for each one. It got me thinking about laser periodontal therapy and how it compares to conventional gum surgery. Treating periodontal disease with a laser is more cost effective than conventional surgery. the reason is two fold. First, with conventional surgery there is a round of scaling done weeks before the surgery. This is not done with the laser and therefore there is a cost saving. Secondly, because the laser treated cases show less relapse it will be more cost effective in the future.
