Periodontist on Long Island Encourages Daily Flossing to Fight Gum Disease

When it comes to the prevention of gum disease we’ve all heard the importance of flossing to thoroughly remove plaque build-up. This is because brushing alone can’t reach every surface of the tooth, leaving behind residue that can quickly lead to a trip to the Periodontist on Long Island.

According to a recent study patients who continue to refuse to floss on a regular basis are putting their oral health at risk for gum disease and tooth decay. The study was conducted at the New York University and observed 51 sets of twins between the ages of 12 and 21.

Each twin was given a randomly assigned oral care regimen to carry out over the course of two weeks. One twin brushed with a manual toothbrush and toothpaste while the other brushed with a manual toothbrush and toothpaste as well as flossed.

At the completion of the two weeks each twin provided samples to determine the level of bacteria associated with gum disease. The results showed two things, first that flossing had a significant impact on the level of bacteria and second how quickly the bacteria actually builds up in the mouth when plaque is not thoroughly removed.

Gum disease begins with the build-up of plaque around the tooth surface. As the plaque builds the gums begin to recede from the tooth, forming pockets. These pockets become ideal habitats for bacteria growth. The bacteria infection soon leads to chronic inflammation of the soft tissue, or gum disease.

It’s easy to recognize that gum disease can be prevented at the source, plaque build-up on the teeth. The best way to ensure thorough removal of plaque is by following a few simple oral hygiene practices:
  • Brush twice a day
  • Floss every time you brush on all sides of each tooth
  • Make sure you are brushing and flossing with proper technique
  • Have your teeth cleaned by a dental practitioner every 6 months
